Rock Crawler

I have created my third mindstorm robot. It is called the Rock Crawler.

About the Rock Crawler

The Rock Crawler is not a complicated robot, although the gears were a great difficulty to me.

The Rock Crawler has a single medium motor that spins throughout the process. The medium motor is attached to a worm gear. The worm gear is attached to another gear which is called a twenty-four toothed gear. The twenty-four toothed gear is attached to a rod that spins slowly with the arms on the rod also spinning. At the end of each J-like arm is a wheel. The wheel does not turn although the arms do. The arms slowly push the robot forward allowing it to crawl on uneven rock-like surfaces.

The Gears On the Rock Crawler

Gears are a type of simple machine that help rotate two axles with one motor. The sharp edges on the gear are called teeth. Their are two gears used by the Rock Crawler.

  • Worm Gear- The worm gear is a spring-like gear with one long tooth  winding around the gear. This Gear provides strength, but is also sluggish. This is called tork.
  • Twenty-Four Toothed Gear- This gear relates to its name because it has twenty-four teeth. This gear is a circular gear that has its gears at the edge of a circle.

How the Rock Crawler Could Be Useful

The Rock Crawler is a robot capable of crawling on rough surfaces. This robot can be used to roam around on Mars with ease and take pictures.This robot can be used to climb mountain ranges on a rescue mission. I am also confident that it can climb your own roof!
